Causes Of Gynecomastia
Certain medical conditions can be the underlying cause of gynecomastia.
Steroid abuse can cause or worsen the condition, as well as cause other side effects. There are several types of cancer that have
gynecomastia as a symptom. These include breast cancer, lung cancer, testicular cancer, and tumors of the adrenal and pituitary
glands.
Other diseases that have gynecomastia as a symptom are cirrhosis, renal disease and dialysis, hyperthyroidism, Gilbert's
syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome, obesity, hemophilia, leprosy, and certain genetic disorders. Diseases that alter hormone levels can
present symptoms. Alcohol, heroin, marijuana, and amphetamins have also been associated with the disease. Some prescription
medications have also caused gynecomastia in rare instances.
If the disease is caused by a medical condition, that condition will need to be corrected first. If it is caused by
medications or drug abuse, it usually resolves itself after they are stopped.
